Bioheat: Maine & New Hampshire’s Oil Heat of the Future

You may be familiar with the terms “Bioheat” or “biodiesel” when it comes to home heating oil. The new bio-revolution is a hot commodity in the oil heating industry this year, and we’re here to explain why. You can place your Bioheat order today by giving Estes Oil a call, or keep reading to see why Bioheat is the next biggest thing in the eco-friendliness of home heating oil in New England.

Bioheat 101: A Beginner’s Guide

Bioheat is a combination of ultra-low sulfur (ULS) home heating oil and recycled soybean and cooking oils, which are processed to create a renewable substance called biodiesel. The percent of biodiesel that goes into the ULS oil blend determines the grade of the Bioheat. B-5 would contain 5% biodiesel and 95% ULS heating oil, while B-10 would contain 10% biodiesel and 90% heating oil.

Bioheat FAQs

Q: You mentioned soybeans. Does biodiesel sacrifice food to create fuel?

A: Not at all! Biodiesel is created from the oil that is produced as a by-product of cooking and processing of different plants. Farmers and cooking establishments used to discard the oil as waste, until recent technological advancements developed a way to burn the oil as home heating fuel. That’s why the fuel is so renewable and eco-friendly: it’s being recycled from a process that would be completed regardless.

Q: Why is Bioheat being used in Maine and New Hampshire?

A: We benefit by living so close to the ocean: we get to enjoy the sights, sounds, and atmosphere that come with the Atlantic. But owning property near the coast also means we have to be extra aware of rising sea levels and how our oil deliveries impact the future of our customers’ properties. Delivering Bioheat is one small way that we can make a big difference in the environment over time.

Q: How can I start ordering Bioheat?

A: Simply continue to place your home heating fuel oil orders with Estes Oil! We’re proud to be environmentally conscious and offer a B-20 Bioheat blend, while other companies are still offering traditional fuel oil or lower blends like B-5. The best part is that Bioheat burns cleanly in your existing oil heat equipment, reducing sediment buildup and helping your system stay cleaner longer.
