Bioheat 101: A Beginner’s Guide

Bioheat is a combination of ultra-low sulfur (ULS) home heating oil and recycled soybean and cooking oils, which are processed to create a renewable substance called biodiesel. The percent of biodiesel that goes into the ULS oil blend determines the grade of the Bioheat. B-5 would contain 5% biodiesel and 95% ULS heating oil, while B-10 would contain 10% biodiesel and 90% heating oil.

Why We Do It

We at Estes Oil believe in a cleaner, greener future for our children and grandchildren. By making this renewable modification to our oil fuel, we are able to provide a healthier and happier environment for future generations—but that’s not the only benefit. As we protect our beautiful planet with the use of recyclable biodiesel, we strive to provide our children with not only a cleaner environment, but also a sense of inspiration to continue caring for our planet in a similar way.

Bioheat FAQs

Q: You mentioned soybeans. Does biodiesel sacrifice food to create fuel?

A: Not at all! Biodiesel is created from the oil that is produced as a by-product of cooking and processing of different plants. Farmers and cooking establishments used to discard the oil as waste, until recent technological advancements developed a way to burn the oil as home heating fuel. That’s why the fuel is so renewable and eco-friendly: it’s being recycled from a process that would be completed regardless.

Q: Why is Bioheat being used in Maine and New Hampshire?

A: We benefit by living so close to the ocean: we get to enjoy the sights, sounds, and atmosphere that come with the Atlantic. But owning property near the coast also means we have to be extra aware of rising sea levels and how our oil deliveries impact the future of our customers’ properties. Delivering Bioheat is one small way that we can make a big difference in the environment over time.

Q: How can I start ordering Bioheat?

A: Simply continue to place your home heating fuel oil orders with Estes Oil! We’re proud to be environmentally conscious and offer a B-20 Bioheat blend, while other companies are still offering traditional fuel oil or lower blends like B-5. The best part is that Bioheat burns cleanly in your existing oil heat equipment, reducing sediment buildup and helping your system stay cleaner longer.
