How to Shut off the Gas Supply on Your Propane Tank
To shut off your propane tank, open the lid of the tank to reveal the shutoff valve. Turn the valve to the right (clockwise) to shut off the propane supply. You should do this if you smell gas, suspect a leak, or can see visible damage. If you have more than one tank, be sure to shut them all off in the event of a suspected propane tank leak. Never turn the propane tank back on by yourself—national safety codes require that a professional checks your propane system before reopening the gas supply or relighting pilots.
What to Do If You Smell Propane Gas
Propane has an added odorant that smells like a skunk’s spray, rotten eggs, or a dead animal. If you smell propane gas, follow these steps right away:
- Evacuate the area without activating electronics or lighting flames or sparks.
- If it is safe to do so, follow the steps above to turn off the valve on your propane tank.
- From a safe distance, call our emergency phone number at (207) 363-4172 or your local fire department immediately. Do not return to the affected area until it has been deemed safe by a propane professional.
- Schedule a propane safety inspection before turning your HVAC equipment back on.
